Frequently Asked Questions

FAQ = Frequently Asked Questions:

On this page we will try to answer any and all questions that you might have about using the Ning site, downloading the PDF, Audio and Video files.

Question 1: What is extreme journalism?

Extreme Journalism is a creative and healing process pioneered by artist Juliana Coles that combines journal writing with art making in a book for self dialogue, soulful expression, and transformation. Click on this
link to read her explanation.

Question 2: Why is my video so choppy, pauses and restarts?

Answer: Many factors can affect how your video displays. First of all, we must insist that if you want to subscribe to the large videos the Institute offers, High Speed Internet access is mandatory. But even with high speed DSL, your video may not download correctly the first time you try to view the video. Our suggestion is to start the download process, mute the sound, and go do some art or organize some stuff while the video downloads. This will allow the video to be placed in "cache" and you should be able to view the video without interrruption after you allow it to load. If your system is slow, you may need to download the video to your desktop and play it from there. (My computer is old I am not able to watch video, not even if I download it- the sound doesn't match up with the image and it plays in still shots.  So if your computer is old like mine, you may not be able to utilize the video in this course. - JC)

Question 3: Why are the PDF files so large, and take so long to load?

Answer: This is how I needed to share my vision.  What can I tell you, I am a very visual artist/writer, and wanted to offer the most stunning documents, rich with content, to you, my students. Color, graphics and a LOT of text takes time to load, but I think that you will feel the wait is worth it.

Question 4: How do I print the PDFs?

Answer: Go to the Download Files page (you must have a password to acces this area, and you will be given a password when you complete the registration process for the Institute of Extreme Journalism), and click on the link for the PDF. Click on the print icon, and pick your printer. These pages are very intensely colored and have colored backgrouds, so they will consume ink. If your printer has the option, you can print in black and white, or grayscale. Consult your owners manual to find out if your printer has this option. This web page will give you tips and tricks for printing a PDF file http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/332/332720.html  (You can also email the document to a local printer, such as Kinkos, and they can print the whole thing in rich color for only pennies a page! I do this when I need to print up something in color or that has a lot of pages, and that saves my ink!  If you send them the four lessons, they can print them all and bind them into one book! Cool!  Please do not use these printed pages to make extra copies, distribute, or sell.  These are for your own personal use only. -JC)

Question 5: How do I download the audio files?

Answer: Go to the Download Files page (you must have a password to access this area, and you will be given a password when you complete the registration process for the Institute of Extreme Journalism), and click on the link for MP3. This will allow you to download the MP3 files.

Question 6: What software do I need to view the PDF?

You will need to have Adobe Acrobat Reader or another PDF reader.

Question 7: Why is my PDF file not displaying all of the page?

Again, many issues can affect how your document displays. On my personal machine, I found that 60% would display the whole page, and I clicked on show whole page. You can use the arrows (left and right) to access the next page.

Question 8: What are bookmarks and pages on the PDF?
Bookmarks and pages on the PDF file are navigation aids. If you know that you want to get to the page that has the link to the video on Lesson One, the bookmark can help you find it, We will set up bookmarks for all major items (links to video, lesson assignements, summaries, etc). You can also click on the page display when you open the pdf file.  These will be the first two buttons to the left of your pdf.

Question 9:  Are there Scholarships available?
Yes, Scholarships are available for Extreme Economic Hardship. At least one scholarship will be given quarterly.  I will need a letter of intent including what you hope to accomplish, why you need this class, and also please explain your hardship. I would also like at least two referrals and a small portfolio, whatever that means to you.  Please email me this information at meandpete.com

Question 11:   Enrollment-How do I enroll?
You must navigate to
Institute for Extreme Journalism .  First sign up for membership in the Ning Network.  There is a little box at the top right that says sign up or sign in.  Anyone can be a member of the Ning Network.   Please note that this IS NOT membership in an individual workshop. Once you have read the Course Description and have signed inot the Ning network,  and if you believe this workshop is for you, you can click on the Paypal link at the bottom of the course content page. After we receive your paypal receipt, you will be furnished with the details necessary to access the course content via another email (I know, email, email…)  that will invite you to join the workshop as well as  provide you passwords to access  the course content PDFs, video and audio.

Question 12:  Can I share this workshop/password/downloadable materials with my friends?

Passwords are only issued after payment has been received. Please do not share your passwords with another party who has not made payment or is not a bonafide member in good standing of the Institute for Extreme Journalism.

Question 13:  Can I use this program to teach?

No, you may not. I earn my living teaching, please respect that.

Question 14:  Can I use the terms "reconciliation," "extreme journalism," "shadowy mist" in a magazine article or in my own teaching?
No you may not. Extreme Journalism is copyrighted by me and Extreme Journaling is trademarked as my business. These are my terms I made up and apply only to the process I teach and cannot be used in conjunction with any other methodology.

Question 15:   How do I get a refund?
There will be no refunds. Please read your course content description carefully as well as all FAQ’s and course guidelines before registering and hitting that Paypal button. If you change your mind before receiving your password, you will be given credit for another online workshop or any booklet of equal value (including shipping and handling charges, from my
etsy store )

Question 16: Can I use a Mac, or is this only available for PCs?

You are accessing websites, so you should be able to access from either a Mac or PC. Support documentation is only available for PCs.

Question 17:   How do I download video? audio? PDF?

After your payment is received from Paypal, you will be furnished locations ( links) with passwords and documentation on where to access these files and how to download them. Some of our videos are fairly long and  the pdf files are high resolution, so they may take a while to download. Please be patient. If your printer has the option, you can print in black and white or greyscale to save on that precious colored ink. You will need to consult your owner's manual for options that are available for your particular printer. You may also email to a professional printer (Fedex, Staples, etc). Your payment of fees to the Institute of Extreme Visual Journalism authorizes you to make prints for personal, non-profesional use, but please to not make extra copies and distribiute them.

Question 18: Where do the files go and where do I find them on my computer?
After the download process starts successfully from the site, we have no control over where your files go. You set the path when you save them on your local machine. Before you download a file, please make a note (in your journal if necessary) about what location you saved the file to. You will be directed by internet links (URLs) from the website to where content is stored on our servers. Contact
meandpete@msn.com if you have problems with a URL location.

Question 19.  What if I can’t view video? Do I get my money back?
You are paying for content and instruction and I am not responsible for a slow computer or slow connections. See Question 2 for some tips and tricks

Question 20. Why do you have MP3 files?

Question 20. Why do you have MP3 files?

Question 19.  What if I can’t view video? Do I get my money back?

Question 20. Why do you have MP3 files?
The MP3 files are an audio version of the PDF files so that you can have a portable version to take with you or listen while you work. These online workshops were designed to be like taking an actual workshop with Juliana.  She is a story teller, and listening to her voice adds to that experience as well as hearing her urge you on.  It's like she's talking to you!

Question 21:  What if I forget my passwords?

Your password for the Institute can be reset on the signup/signin screen on the Institute site. Your Ning passwords are not available to me. Passwords for content, video and audio must be reset by me. Email meandpete@asn.com for a password reset.   Please have your paypal reciept or transaction number ready.

Question 22:   How long is my membership in the group/workshop?

Most workshops will be posted on a quarterly basis and will be good for 120 days (3 months). You can enroll at any time during the 3 month period.  The Workshop may be offered at a later quarter, but you would need to re-enroll. Special workshops may be offered at different times during the year. Your membership in the Ning Network will be ongoing and will not expire. A group message will let you know that the end of the quarter is approaching. It is your responsibility to download class materials before the workshop is removed.

Question 23: How do I know when my membership is up?
It is your responsibilty to mark that date on your calendar. You will not get an indivual notice, though you will get a group notice though the workshop letting you knw you have a week left.

Question 24:
Who can participate?
These workshops are available to all ages though the material is geared towards adults and may not be appropriate or suitable for teens and children who have yet to fill that shadow bag behind them.  For those under 16, please assess your maturity level.  For that matter, all ages need to assess their maturity level in terms of their own path of initiation and self awareness.  These workshops are not for the faint of heart.  I also swear sometimes, and foul language may not be appropriate for all.  These workshops are open for all levels of experience, ethnic backgrounds, cultures, nationalities, sexual orientation, etc.  And though I try to be equal, much of this work is geared towards, and written for, women. In my vast experience, that is typically who signs up for inner work. And while I try to direct these online workshops to both men and women, there will probably be instances where men will have to focus on their inner feminine, or translate the assignment the best way they can in order for it to make sense. Even though I have written the assignments and I am the one leading, you are really giving yourself your own assignments, as each indivual will internalize and translate each assignment to suit themeselves.

Question 25: What do I need to start? Do I need a lot of expensive materials?
All that you need are some basic materials: a book to alter, some pens, glue stick, a few colors of cheapie acrylic paint and a paint brush. Don't go out and buy lots of expensive materials. I give a complete list of supplies in lesson one of the workshop, but they are not mandatory for the process. Each workshop will have a complete list of all required materials.

Question 26: How can I get more in-depth, more personal direction such as personal assignments designed specifically for me and the work I am embarking upon?
I have a one on one Private coaching program. For more details check out my etsy store
.

Question 27: I’ve never done anything like this before. What if I can't write and I don't have an art background? Is this an art program? is this a writing program?
You don't need any art or writing experience, just an openness and willingness to access the symbols from your unconscious for dialogue and healing. And you don't need to know how to do that.  I will guide you through this. Extreme Visual Journaling is the combination of words with images so in this workshop, we put the two together.

Question 28: What is the Tribal Council ?
The Tribal council is the "group forum" and it will be housed inside each specific Workshop group page. Here we will post details of our process, assignments, etc. I have specific questions to help you pariticpate in the Tribal Council. I moderate the Tribal Council and do my best to answer your questions, though it will not be possible for me to answer each and every one. For private coaching, please see my description at my etsy store.

Question 29: H
ow do I post to the Tribal Council? How do I upload images?
Ning offers excellent help pages about posting and uploading to the Institute for Extreme Journalism web site.

Question 30:
I want to participate in tribal council but I am intimidated. My work isn't as good, cool, interesting, smart, pretty or as emotional as everyones else's.
The great thing about my workshops is everyone is in the same boat. Whether advanced or beginner artist, writer, journaler, or extreme visual journaler, we will all be equal. We will all be intimidated at first, that's natural. But once you get started, the sharing of voices will become your favorite part. I have specific assignments that will make it easier. Don't be nervous- it will be okay. And no one HAS to participate, thoughi do encourage it.

Question 31:  I would like more input in the Tribal Council, or Group Forum from the instructor.
I can only answer general questions and will do my best to moderate the group, though I can’t answer each and every individual or personal question.  I will try to answer your questions as they pertain to the group. If you feel you need more help, please contact me for private coaching.

Question 32. Someone hurt my feelings in the tribal council.
I'll do my best to moderate the group and watch out for you. I’ll pay careful attention for abuse of any kind and unkindness, but it is hard to know what everyone wil take personally. What I think is silly, may be a real heartbreaker for you, and vice versa. Please contact me directly at meandpete@msn.com with any issue that is not covered in the tribal council. In the Tribal Council, we want to keep our focus on the work itself and process.
Tribal Council is not your personal therapy. Abuse of tribal council by any member constitutes immediate grounds for expulsion from the program.

Question 33: Can I copy someone’s artwork from the Tribal Council or flickr and use it in one of my journal pages?

Any artwork posted to the Institute is shared content, but ownership of the artwork is still held by the artist. Any unethical use of another artist's work will lead to expulsion from the group.  We need to respect our work and each other. Besides, you don't need another's work for your backgrounds or imagery, you have plenty of your own that we will develop in the workshop!

Question 34: How do I choose my book?
Within the workshop, I share some of my vast collection of books, and give you guidance in a video about what to look for in a book to alter. You might have the perfect book to alter in your bookshelf right now. See info on choosing a book.

Question 35:
What if scary things/emotions come up for me?

Everyone needs to assess their ability to navigate dangerous psychic territory: the realm of our most precious gifts. Everyone's level of self awareness is different. Our experience is relative.  I encourage you to push through- to not stop when you get scared, but to forge onward. When I work, I am often in a torrent of tears, but if I hold on and hold out, my tears become a healing river that will be reflected on my pages. It is all right to cry.  And scream.  And yell. And get angry. That's what your pages are for.  They are not just for pretty happy stuff.  And remember, you can always close your book. You will keep yourself safe in your book. I imagine things will come up you are not prepared for. If you have never done this kind of work before, you may need extra support: you may need to ask friends or family or resource centers in your town for references for some kind of therapy or group therapy program to assist you and guide you through these new, yet rewarding, experiences. Inner work is not for everyone in that you may not be ready. You will know when you are ready, though that doesn't make it easier.

Question 36: Where is my class?
Classes are stored on a centralized server, and details on how to access them will be sent after your enrollment and fees have been processed.

And Remember, Protect yourself and your vision like it is your own child: it is.
